MWTex opens a Most Wanted STREAM*.BUN, finds every texture in it (DXT1, DXT3, DXT5 and ARGB32) with its name, size, mip count and format, and cleans each one. It never changes the bundle: the results go into a new folder as .dds files, which a mod loader such as NFSMW-ML can pick up.
How a texture is cleaned
- Decoded to an image.
- Run through Real-ESRGAN at 4x, which rebuilds edges and surface detail and removes the DXT block grid.
- Scaled back down to the exact original width and height with a Lanczos filter.
- Encoded again in the same compression format with the same number of mips.
The game loads a texture of the same size it always did, so nothing else has to change. The GPU runs the enhancement through realesrgan-ncnn-vulkan, which works on NVIDIA, AMD and Intel cards, while the CPU decodes and encodes other textures at the same time. A before-and-after grid shows every texture.
